2020 was undoubtedly a year from hell for many, and it’s no surprise that we needed to find distractions to get us through. It’s not a competition, but if it were, there’s one app that would come out on top, riding the pandemic wave and accumulating over 2 billion downloads by April. Obviously, I’m talking about TikTok. The app dominated our screens and our attention and created a number of memes and trends that permeated popular culture going viral with a rapidity that’s seldom been seen before.
“It’s been our honour to watch these videos and creators grow and share what have become iconic, sometimes even life-changing, moments of 2020”, said Vanessa Pappas, Interim Head of TikTok in an article about the app’s 100 most successful videos of the year.
We know you have more productive things to do than watch 100 Tiktoks right now, many of which you’ve probably already seen (and we personally don’t understand how they got to be so popular anyway), so here are ten of the most popular Tiktoks of 2020.
1. @BellaPoarch’s ‘M to the B’
2. @420doggface208 and his cranberry juice
3. @itscaitlinhello works from home
4. @NBA’s video of Jalaiah , creator of Renegade, performing at the NBA All-Star Game
5. @WillSmith wiping it down
6. @awa_de_horchata_uwu and the most annoying song you’ll ever hear
7. @lizemopetey and the meteor
8. @iamtabithabrown’s carrot bacon
9. @thejulianbass being everyone’s favourite hero
10. @hartyt_ and the grooviest goose
Whether you actually get why some of these videos became as popular as they did or not doesn’t change the fact that they had an enormous impact on millions of people across the world, making a name for every one of their creators.
And speaking of creators, here’s the list of Tiktok’s biggest breakout stars of the year:
- Charli D’Amelio
- Tabitha Brown
- Bella Poarch
- Devon Rodriguez
- Wisdom Kaye
- Addison Rae
- Michael Le
- Chriselle Lim
- Noah Beck
But it’s not only people who skyrocketed to global recognition, food shot to fame too as everyone learned to become a semi-professional chef while stuck in lockdown. Tiktok’s list of the top food trends, or “the crème de la crème of TikTok food content” in 2020, is as follows:
- Pancake Cereal
- Whipped Coffee
- Banana Bread
- Oddly satisfying for the BBQ lovers
- Donut Cereal
- Ramsay Reacts
- Cream cheese and bell peppers
- Ice Cream Cake
- How to make chocolate… from scratch
- DIY Hazelnut Spread
What may seem like mindless entertainment to some is a platform for unlimited creativity to others. Tiktok in 2020 has been a space in which creators could express themselves, inspire others and build communities throughout this difficult year. It can definitely be a blackhole that sucks up all your time, but it’s also been one of the most helpful coping mechanisms as we stayed confined to our homes for months of the year.
So if it were a competition, and we had to award a prize to a single beacon of light, a saving grace, and the kind of entertainment we needed in 2020, that award would go to Tiktok without a fraction of a doubt.
