Liverpool beat Crystal Palace in a 7-0 demolition on Saturday, while Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham suffered a defeat at home against Leicester City on Sunday. We bring you all of the results from this weekend’s Premier League action.
Crystal Palace 0-7 Liverpool
After taking their place at the top of the table from Spurs last weekend, the Reds came out all guns blazing in their game against Roy Hodgson‘s side who appear to be a team that’ll finish mid-table this season. An early strike from Takumi Minamino, braces from Mohammed Salah and Roberto Firmino, as well as a goal each from Sadio Mane and Jordan Henderson made light work of what could have been a tricky away game. And the champions are truly starting to look like they have what it takes to retain their crown.
Southampton 0-1 Man City
While Liverpool are starting to look like the unbeatable behemoth that Man City were just two seasons ago, Pep Guardiola‘s men put in a solid performance, where they dominated the game against third-placed Southampton. But in the end it was a single strike from Raheem Sterling that sealed an important win that brings City up to a more respectable 7th place after their horror start to the season, which has seen them drop points on seven occasions. More routine 1-0 wins should be all that Guardiola can ask for as he hopes to climb up the table over the packed Christmas schedule.
Everton 2-1 Arsenal
An own goal from Rob Holding and a Yerry Mina header on either side of a Nicolas Pépé penalty allowed Carlo Ancelotti‘s Everton to temporarily occupy second place on the table (they dropped to fourth after Sunday’s results), while Arsenal‘s horror start to the season continues and they remain 15th on the table.
Newcastle 1-1 Fulham
A Matt Ritchie own goal and a Callum Wilson penalty in either half saw Newcastle and Fulham share the spoils at St. James’ Park, leaving Newcastle in 12th position and Fulham one place above the relegation zone, leading 18th placed Burnley on goal difference only.
Brighton 1-1 Sheffield United
A truly pulsating encounter at the tail-end of the table. After John Lundstram was sent off in the first half, we saw a game with plenty of goalmouth action saw Jayden Bogle score on his debut for Sheffield United, before Danny Welbeck pulled one back for the home team. It is only Sheffield’s second point of the season, as they’re still rooted to the bottom, while Brighton retain their spot in 16th.
Tottenham 0-2 Leicester City
Jamie Vardy‘s penalty late in the first half was followed by a Toby Alderweireld own goal that secured a critical away win for Leicester at the top of the table. They leapfrog Spurs to go second in the standings, as Jose Mourinho saw his team fall to fifth by the end of the weekend.
Man United 6-2 Leeds United
This traditional English rivalry was lit on fire when Man United squared off against Leeds for the first time in 16 years. As usual, Bruno Fernandes was involved throughout, scoring twice and grabbing an assist for Scott McTominay‘s early opener. McTominay scored a second goal just a minute later, courtesy of Anthony Martial‘s through ball. Strikes from Victor Lindelöf and Daniel James, put the cherry on top for United, while Leeds’ goals from Liam Cooper and Scott Dallas were mere consolations. The win takes Man United into third place in the standings, while Leeds remain in 14th.
West Brom 0-3 Aston Villa
Aston Villa‘s spectacular away form this season continued after an early strike from Anwar El Ghazi looked like it may have been the only goal of the game, with Jake Livermore‘s 36th minute red card putting West Brom on the back for for the entirety of the second half. Sam Allardyce looked set for a respectable loss in his first game in charge of The Baggies. However, a late strike from Bertrand Traore put the result to bed before El Ghazi grabbed his second from the spot.
