If you’re looking for a simple homemade recipe for hot cocoa to warm yourself up on a cold winter evening and satisfy your craving for something sweet, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve found the perfect recipe for a steamy cup of homemade hot cocoa that takes less than 15 minutes!
I find hot cocoa to be a super underrated comford food (drink) that just makes winter easier. On those days when you just can’t seem to get warm enough. Many people enjoy instant cocoa/hot chocoalate, but a simple homemade recipe that you can tweak and perfect over time is just way, way better. So I stumbled accross a very simple recipe for homemade hot cocoa that takes no time at all and that’s dynamic enough for you to add a few extra ingredients to give it a special flavour.
Makes 5 cups
Total time: 15
What you need:
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup baking cocoa
1/3 cup hot water
4 cups milk
Pinch of salt
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional: Marshmallows, sweetened whipped cream, cinnamon sticks, instant coffee, maple syrup
How it’s done:
In a saucepan, mix dry ingredients together, and add water, make a light melted paste at the bottom of the pan. Stir in the milk as you turn on the heat. Stir and heat up to serving temperature and remove from the heat (do not boil). Stir in the vanilla and whisk until frothy. You can also add marshmallows, cream or cinnamon sticks to your mixture for extra flavour.
Serve hot with a ladel into a large mug and enjoy!
Swiss Mocha Cocoa: Add 2 to 2 1/2 teaspoons of instant coffee to your mix
Canadian Cocoa: Add 1/2 a teaspoon of maple syrup with the vanilla
Slim Cocoa: Omit sugar from the recipe and substitute milk with a fat-free option. Stir in 1/2 cup of artificial sweetener with vanilla
So there you have it, a quick, simple recipe that takes no time at all. And because it’s so dynamic, you can play around with the optional ingredients and make it your own!
