The period drama by Shonda Rhimes made waves when it, in all its bingeable glory, was released last year. Now, fans are anxiously awaiting the second season. Here’s what we know so far about Bridgerton season 2.
The Duke of Hastings will not be returning
The news that heartthrob Regé-Jean Page will not be returning for Season 2 has already been widely circulated – much to the dismay of all his new fans. This should not have come as a surprise, though, as the books on which the series is based foretold of the absence of the Hastings newlyweds.
According to Shonda Rhimes herself, Page had always and only been signed to a one-season deal, and though he was invited to return for Bridgerton Season 2 cameos, he declined those.
“[T]here’s a lot of fantastically interesting talk that’s been going on,” Rhimes is quotes by TVLine, “mainly ’cause I think people are having a hard time letting go…He’s a busy man!”
Bridgerton Season 2 will focus on Anthony
Fans were immersed in the love story of Daphne and the Duke in season one, but we now know that each season will follow the story of another Bridgerton sibling. In fact, producers are planning to have a season for every single one of the siblings! In season 2, it’s Anthony’s turn to claim the spotlight.
You’ll recall that the first season ended with a bee – a hint at the season to come. Anthony is terrified of bees ( his father was killed by a bee sting) and he’s certain he’ll die young like his father did. So, in the new season, we follow Anthony as he – already approaching 30 – decides to marry and settle down.
Of course, this will not go particularly smoothly or there won’t be anything to watch at all. And while we don’t yet know how much the series will deviate from the books, we can be sure that it will involve a steamy love triangle, and, of course, a bee.
This PopSugar article summarises the plot of the book on which season 2 is based for those who are eager for potential spoilers.
Simone Ashley will star as Anthony’s love interest
Simone Ashley of Sex Education fame will be staring as Kate Sharma, Netflix’s reimagining of the Kate Sheffield of the books. According to Elle, “Ashley’s casting reaffirms Bridgerton’s commitment to reinventing the Regency era with a much more diverse high-class society”.
The romance between these two promises to be as sweeping and dramatic as the one we saw in season 1, and personally, I can’t wait.
Charithra Chandran has also been cast in the role of Kate’s younger sister, (and Anthony’s bride-to-be if the spoiler’s I’ve seen are to be believed) Edwina.
Other new cast members will include Calam Lynch (Derry Girls) and Rupert Young (Merlin) .
Filming of Season 2 has already begun!
Enough said. According to Elle, The series held its first season 2 table read on Monday, March 29.
We learned the real identity of the mysterious Lady Whistledown at the end of the last season, and here’s hoping that, in Bridgerton season 2 she might reveal herself to at least one other member of the community – if only to shake things up.
Regardless of what surprises await, we’ve got another few years of Bridgerton ahead of us – at least up to the show’s fourth season!
