PitStop, and its main event, the Grille Shack, is a rustic, energetic, automotive playground inspired by 1950s pump diners. It stands out boldly next to the R44, just beyond Gordon’s Bay, calling travellers to pop in for a coffee or a bite to eat. Tables with colourful metal chairs spill out of the building and sprawl across a lawn in the back – all full of diners who know a gem when they see one. They devour corn dogs, burgers, nachos and desserts with gusto, while sipping on cool beers and cocktails. Whether you’re on your way to your weekend at the beach, or just popping out of town for lunch, Grille Shack has you covered.
Somehow both off-the-grid, and close enough to town to be accessible PitStop in Gordon’s Bay is in the ideal spot. It’s nestled between the mountains and the sea, and can feel like vacation whilst also only a short(ish) drive away.
I visited PitStop and the Grille Shack on Valentine’s Day, and was pleasantly surprised to receive a glass of sparkling wine and a chocolate on my way in the door. This unique and personal touch made stepping into the bold interior all that much more refreshing. As if the bright and colourful surroundings weren’t already a great way to shake off some of the lethargy the road trip had brought on.
The place was packed – clearly a lot of people already knew it was exactly where they wanted to be on a Sunday afternoon. It’s no surprise, as the menu seems to boast something for everybody. Though their vegan options were somewhat limited, one can get by. For those who follow less restrictive diets, there’s a wide range of options to choose from. If you’re going for mains, prepare to pay more than you would at McD’s – they’re not especially cheap. However, they could be a great spot for a celebration or as the highlight to a day out.
PitStop in Gordon’s Bay also plays host to a tuck stop, at which you can grab a cup of coffee if all you need is a little boost of energy on your way. If nothing else, it’s a fun spot to stop by for some IG content.
