Ramaphosa To Address Nation At 8pm Tonight

President Ramaphosa is expected to announce South Africa’s return to a level 4 lockdown in his nationwide address that has been scheduled for 20:00 tonight.

Ramaphosa is expected to announce an extension of the current Covid-19 restrictions for another month, according to News24 and, despite facing a court case from South African Breweries (SAB), the restrictions on the sale of alcohol will continue.

“President Ramaphosa will address the nation at 20h00 today, Monday 11 January 2021, on developments in relation to the country’s response to the Coronavirus pandemic,” the Presidency said on Twitter. “The address follows meetings in recent days of the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC), the President’s Coordinating Council (PCC) and Cabinet.

“President Ramaphosa also hosted a virtual engagement on Sunday 10 January 2020 between government and interfaith leaders on the Covid-19 Risk Adjusted Strategy which is an inclusive national effort that enables adaptive responses to the shifting pandemic.”

The announcement also revealed that the President will be discussing South Africa’s vaccination strategy.

“This engagement focused on the unfolding pandemic in the country and on the continent, including efforts to secure vaccines for all. The President’s address will be broadcast and streamed on a range of platforms that are accessible to South Africans and international audiences.”

News24 also reports that curfews will remain in place, as well as similar restrictions on social gatherings. The discussion over whether or not to reopen schools will prove controversial, with growing concerns over the far more detrimental effects that the new strain of the virus has on younger people.
