5 Wellness Trends To Look Forward To In 2021

2020 has been a total disaster, largely thanks to the global COVID-19 pandemic. But 2021 opens up a whole bunch of opportunities to right this year’s wrongs and what better way to start than by incorporating these wellness trends for 2021 into your post-COVID-19 life?


You can be forgiven if 2021 was a wellness disaster, or for falling behind on the lofty goals you set yourself in terms of looking after your body and your mind, in the midst of the global pandemic and economic turmoil that will forever define this year. But, even if you did pick up too many pounds while you were locked down, or you picked up a few bad habits along the way, 2021 is giving you a fresh opportunity to repent from your evil ways and get your health, fitness and wellness goals back on track. And the Essential Millennial is here to help you stay ahead of the curve. Here are some of the hottest wellness trends for 2021:

1. Sanitisers

This one is pretty obvious… but, while we’ve all kitted out our homes, cars and offices with bottles of hand sanitiser, it has become a product category on its own overnight. Forget the standard, vanilla, unscented sanitisers that you bought at the grocery store – we’ve moved into an era of luxury, rainbow-themed, alcohol free, organic and scented sanitisers. Before long, you’re going to be spoilt for choice and will get the chance to select a sanitiser that matches your personality!

Wellness apps are nothing new and we’ve been using our phones to track our fitness and tell us what to eat for years, but wellness apps are now offering far more than ever, with everything that you could possibly desire in terms of nutritional advice, counselling, meditation and sleep-tracking  all right at your fingertips. And people aren’t hesitating to pay for apps either. With money being tight for a lot of us this year, we have been more than happy to spend a subscription fee on an app than pay higher fees to see nutritionists or fitness instructors in person, while we also have access to the information we need without having to leave home.

3. Home workouts

Gyms are frightening cesspools these days. You’d think that, by now, people would have caught onto the message that dumbbells need to be sanitised after use, that you need to be cautious about where you sweat and breathe, and every other step we need to be taking to ensure our gyms are safe environments. So more and more people, who were excited to go back to gym when they were all totally shut, have reconsidered paying their monthly membership fee to go to a place where you are putting your life at risk.

For people who have the means to do so, you’re going to be finding more and more people buying machines, treadmills and exercise bikes and opting to build their own home gyms, while many of us will just settle for a yoga mat and a set of dumbbells. Fitness apps such as Nike Training Club offer tailored workout routines according to what equipment you have on hand and we’ll be seeing a lot more home workout apps being released over the course of the year, as the market continues to grow at an exponential rate.

4. Digital detoxing

If you haven’t watched Netflix’s The Social Dilemma, where have you been living?

Aside from the added layer of anxiety that being locked up brings, millennials are starting to become acutely aware of the detrimental effects of spending so much time on social media. The Social Dilemma took the world by storm this year and exposed the evils of Facebook, Twitter et al. in a truly meaningful way that we were never quite able to express before. We’ve all secretly known how bad it can be, but 2020 has compelled us to start paying attention…

So, don’t be surprised to hear your friends say from time to time that they’re taking a social media detox or going off the grid for a while. Your mental health is just as important, or, in fact, far more important than getting that perfect, flat stomach and 2021 will be the year that we start paying attention to an issue that has started to boil over.

5. Home atmosphere

As we’ve left our offices, our gyms, our favourite coffee shops and pretty much the entire world behind in our new socially-distanced reality, there has been great emphasis placed on creating a healthy home atmosphere and environment.

“It’s this idea of wellness and atmosphere at home, and taking a more holistic approach,” Lucie Greene, futurist and founder of The Light Years Consultancy, tells WWD.

Air and whatever purifiers, scents and fragrances, atmospheric music, decor focussed on creative living and other ways to delight your senses in the home that you’re spending so much more time in now will start to become commonplace in 2021.


While 2020 was not an easy year for any of us, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Taking on 2021 with renewed energy and by taking care of your wellness by keeping up with these trends will go a long way towards living your best life next year.
