The ANC Top 6 will meet today to discuss the developments surrounding the arrest of Secretary-General, Ace Magashule.
Magashule made his first appearance at the Bloemfontein magistrate’s court on Friday where he responded to charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering. His arrest will reignite an old debate over whether leaders within the ANC who are facing criminal charges should resign from their positions, with the National Executive Committee (NEC) set to meet at the end of the month.
Prior to his arrest, Magashule assured the top 6 that he will cooperate with law enforcement, according to TimesLIVE and after his arrest he claimed that only the branches of the ANC could remove him.
ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe confirmed to the Sunday Times that top 6 officials will meet today to discuss developments around the arrest of Magashule, and described this as a complex issue. However, he refused to weigh in on Magashule’s comments.
Treasurer-General Paul Mashatile and Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte both said last week that Magashule will continue to operate within the ANC headquarters for the time being because party leadership had not discussed the prospect of him stepping down in the midst of his legal battles. The NEC will be finalising guidelines surrounding the “step aside rule”, which was adopted in 2017 as a conference resolution.
