Police minister Bheki Cele has said that more arrests can be expected in the Senzo Meyiwa murder case.
Yesterday, five suspects were arrested in connection with the murder of late Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, who was shot and killed in a robbery, while visiting his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus six years ago. However, according to Cele, who was questioned after a visit to Senzo Meyiwa’s family members, the arrests are just the beginning of several strides that are being taken forward in this high-profile case.
“It is not the end, we will be picking other people [sic],” Cele said, as reported by eNCA. “And we are very confident that the processes and the people we have are the right people to be there.”
Cele also explained the reason behind his visit to the Meyiwa family, saying that he wanted to speak to them before they heard any further information on the case through the media.
“We were pushed hard by the leaks and we didn’t want there to be any confusion,” he said.
“We wanted to sit down with the family and tell them about the steps we’ve taken.”
The Meyiwa family has also made a statement through family spokesperson, Siyabonga Meyiwa, that they believe Senzo’s murder may have been premeditated.
“He [Cele] has informed us that it was probably a well-organised crime and said there are going to be more people who will be brought to book after the first bunch of people have already been identified,” Meyiwa said, as reported by EWN.
The accused are expected to appear in Boksburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
