10 Halloween Horror Movies For A Seriously Spooky Movie Marathon

The Horror genre gets a lot of flack for being…well, often quite bad. But there’s a reason the handful of good ones are so enduring. A truly good horror movie stays with you – whether you want it to or not. For some, that thrill is equal to what others get from riding a rollercoaster or bungee jumping – but better because you can do it with hot chocolate and popcorn. So, since halloween parties aren’t advised in the middle of the pandemic, we’ve compiled a list of must-see Halloween Horror Movies so you can snuggle up for a creepy night in on October 31st.

1. Train to Busan

This chilling film takes the timeless zombie genre to another level. The suspense and emotional ties we form with its protagonists put this up near the top of our list of zombie classics. If you like zombies, but have never taken the plunge into Korean Cinema, you’re in for a treat.

2. Insidious

Insidious has been lauded for being the franchise that “snapped us out of the gore-sploitation era” (a la Saw). Not only did this 2010 film send horros in a new direction, but it sparked a series of films that have made their mark on the horror scene. The fact that this is an entire franchise of films means you’ll have a lot to look forward to once the horror bug has bitten. Not to mention, you can’t call yourself a true fan of the genre if you haven’t at least watched this first one.

3. Us

From the mind of Jordan Peele comes another chilling cinematic event. Us stars the phenomenal Lupita Nyong’o, and follows a family on vacation, as they find themselves under attack by a group who look just like them, but way creepier. If you enjoyed Get Out, this one will be a terrifying delight.

4. A Quiet Place

A family navigating a post-apocalyptic world is at the centre of this survivalist horror. This film, starring Emily Blunt, has received particularly high reviews for a film in the horror genre, making it a fairly new, but essential, member of the canon. A sequel is due for release next year, so you better make sure you add this one to the Halloween Horror Movies list if you haven’t already seen it!

5. It Follows

This creepy psychological thriller has also received decent reviews, and has been dubbed, by one critic, “an honest-to-goodness horror masterpiece”. Its ending, and the fact that it delves into the issue of teenage sex and STI’s in an unusual way, which makes for interesting discussion afterwards. If you like to discuss your movies afterwards, this is one for your list.

6. Rosemary’s Baby

An old-school classic from 1968, this film was hailed at the time as being the most perfectly-crafted horror film ever made. According to pop culture lore, it’s also cursed, and brought woe on to all those involved in its making. The mysteries that followed its production and release are almost enough for it to warrant a spot on our Halloween Horror Movie list.

7. Donnie Darko

While not exactly terrifying, this classic starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Drew Barrymore is a blend of creepy and strange that makes it perfect for halloween viewing. In fact, it’s even set during halloween! This mind-bending celebration of weirdness is one that sticks with you for the rest of your life and will have Gary Jules’s Mad World stuck in your head for weeks.

8. The Shining

Another classic which, if you haven’t already seen it, is a truly essential part of any horror enthusiasts watch list. This combination of Stanley Kubrick’s filmmaking and Stephen King’s writing made for an unforgettable film, which might leave you with nightmares about being stuck in a hotel – it did for me anyway. Jack Nicholson’s performance in The Shining is also arguably one of the most iconic horror performances ever given. Do yourself a favour and give it a watch this halloween. Better yet, read the book.

9. Suspiria

One of the most impactful and intriguing art horrors of the 2010’s Suspiria teaches us that sometimes dance instructors aren’t just dance instructors.  It stars Dakota Johnson as an American woman who enrols at a prestigious dance academy in Berlin, only to find that there are dark forces at work. According to one reviewer, ““Suspiria” has been made with enough skill to get inside your head, but also with enough ominous pretension to leave you scratching it”.

10. 8

We’ve reviewed this South African horror on Essential Millennial before, and on account of its unique local flavour, it wins a spot on our 2020 Halloween Horror Movies list. Yes, the ending is a little strange, and the plot isn’t overly creative, but it accomplishes enough for South African cinema that we love it anyway. Despite often repeating many of the same tropes, the horror genre really does have a lot to offer, and if you’re eager for a creepy October, you have a whole bunch of options to choose from.
