Cristiano Ronaldo Tests Positive For COVID-19

The Portuguese Football Federation have confirmed Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo has tested positive for COVID-19. The legendary footballer is asymptomatic and self-isolating.

Ronaldo, who is the highest goal scorer of all time in the Portuguese national team, will therefore miss the UEFA Nations League encounter against Sweden on Wednesday. He is also set to miss Juventus’ match against Crotone away from home in Serie A.

However, he should be available when Juventus take on Barcelona, where Ronaldo will revive his rivalry with the Catalan giants and his individual battle for supremacy with Lionel Messi, according to reports. The Champions League match against Barcelona will take place at the Camp Nou on October 28. For now, the 35-year-old will be quarantining and self-isolating.

Meanwhile, while Portugal will certainly be missing his services, Portugal’s coach, Fernando Santos, has confirmed that Ronaldo is fine, despite testing positive for COVID-19, and that he would like to have played if not for the need to protect other players.

“He just says that he wants to play,” Santos said at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, as reported by Marca. “Any player who is absent due to COVID-19 is a big loss, and Ronaldo’s absence is probably even greater [than anyone else’s]. But I have absolute confidence in those players who are going to play.”

The good news, however, is that the rest of the Portuguese national team, who Ronaldo was taking selfies with during their dinner together on Monday night, have tested negative.

Ronaldo joins a host of football stars that have tested positive for COVID-19, with his former teammate, Miralem Panic (now at Barcelona), current teammates Daniele Rugani, Blaise Matuidi and Paulo Dyabala, as well as Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta, among a number of other players, primarily playing in Italy and Spain.
