Nine Dead After Terrorist Attack In Germany

In an attack that is being treated as an act of terrorism, nine people have died in a mass shooting at the hands of a far-right extremist in the German city of Hanau.

A gunman opened fire on two shisha bars in the Western city killing nine at around 22:00 local time. The clientele of both places that were targeted are reported by the BBC to be predominantly Kurdish. The suspect, who was reportedly found dead, along with his mother’s body at home, wrote a letter expressing his far right views and confessing to the crime and released a video. However, this is still to be confirmed.

The first target was the Midnight shisha bar in the center of the city, where witnesses reported at least a dozen gunshots, reports BBC. At least three people were killed. The shooter then fled the scene to the Arena Bar & Cafe in Kesselstadt, where he killed at least another five. Police embarked on a seven-hour man hunt and expected to find more than one attacker, before discovering the suspect’s body, along with another, reported to be his own mother.

Hesse Interior Minister Peter Beuth told the BBC that this is being treated as a terrorist attack and Germany’s government spokesman Steffen Seibert said, “My thoughts are with the people in Hanau this morning, where an appalling crime was committed”.

This attack comes just four days after another shooting in Berlin, where one person was killed near a Turkish comedy show.
